Guayabita del Pinar is a traditional and unique alcoholic beverage originating from the province of Pinar del Río, Cuba, and is considered one of the island’s most distinctive spirits.
Its production dates back to the 19th century, when Basque entrepreneur Lucio Garay Zabala founded a factory in 1892 to commercialize this beverage, which had already been produced artisanally by local inhabitants. Over time, it became an emblematic product of the region and even received international awards in the early 20th century.
The drink takes its name from the guayabita (Psidium salutare), a small wild fruit similar to guava that grows in the pine forests of the region. These fruits are a key ingredient, and in many bottles one or two guayabitas can still be found inside.
Beyond its flavor, Guayabita del Pinar is considered a cultural gem of Cuba, representing the rural traditions and identity of the Vueltabajo region. Today, it is increasingly rare to find outside its area of production, making it especially prized by those who discover it.
